Protest and Change on the Streets of Tel Aviv
Israel is a country with a deep history of mass social protest, as a means for provoking democratic change. As its economic and cultural capital, Tel Aviv is the protest center of virtually every social and political protest campaign that was undertaken in the last four decades. This walk will take you through the major locations of protest events the city center has to offer, in which some of the most defining campaigns were undertaken, since 1982 and up until today. We will dive into each of the major campaigns, its motivations, dynamics and results (both short and long term), and thus will learn about the social issues that were deemed vital enough to take to the street. Among the campaigns we will review are the 1982 protest against the Lebanon War, the 1995 protest against violence, the 2011 Tent Protest, and the 2018 protest against deportation of asylum seekers.Walk StartsHabima Square (by the Kadishman Sculpture)
